I commented how much I liked the tumbled travertine that she had installed on
the floor, the shower, and the tub surround. Rose responded that she couldn’t wait to replace the white formica vanity – against the new upgrades, it stuck out like a sore thumb. Since it bothered her
so much, I told her I might be able to do something. She only said she’d like it to blend in with the tile so it looked that they belonged together. I
decided to pick up some of the mid-tone grayish browns from the tile and to
texture the cabinet so the grain of wood could be seen and felt. This would
give a similar visual and tactile match to the tumbled marble. It now looks and
feels like antique wood.
Her husband Ron was the first one out for the weekend, and the first to see the
final result. He is a man of few words. When he got his wife on the phone he
exclaimed,
“It was plastic, now it’s wood!”
