Which parts are wood, which parts are stone?
From Formica to Barn board . . .
The panel with the Beach sign on it is white formica – there is one on the other side of the
kitchen as part of the refrigerator enclosure.

My client has a wonderful breakfast nook that she loves to sit and relax in. As we were discussing colors for the kitchen, she mentioned (as an afterthought) how she hated staring at those formica panels while sitting at the table.

I love moments like these because she had no idea that something could actually be done about it. So it came as a huge surprise when I told her I thought I could have them match the rustic beams. She replied, that if it was possible, she’d rather have weathered barn board.

While thinking through the job, I realized that I could change the color of the formica to look like weathered barn board. However, the moment someone touches it they could tell it was formica. It had to look and feel like wood, or it wasn’t worth doing.

It’s hard to see in the photo but I first divided the 24” wide panel into two 12” wide boards. Then I put a special primer on the formica. When it was dry I started to texture the formica to the standard of old barn board. If you can look close to the Beach sign, you can actually see age cracks. This could be done to any item in your home, and it is as durable as wood.

When the texturizing was done, I applied my color. I can fine tune this so it is the exact hue and tint to match the needs of the client.
